7,000 gallon pool: how much of each chemical

For a 7,000-gallon pool, 7.2 fl oz of 12.5% liquid chlorine raises free chlorine by 1 ppm.

Always follow your product’s label directions. Pool and spa chlorine, bromine, shock and algaecides are EPA-registered pesticides: use products labeled for pool or spa use, and don’t swim or soak until levels are within the limit on your product’s label. If this page and a label disagree, the label wins.

Don't swim yet

Chlorine is low. After the acid step (step 3 below), wait 30 minutes with the pump running before anyone gets in.

Your targets: FC 3–4 ppm (minimum 3 for CYA 40; your label's swim limit: 4 ppm), pH 7.4–7.6, TA 80–120, CYA 30–50. If your product's label lists different levels, the label wins.

On this page (9 sections)

With 10% chlorine, it takes 9 fl oz, and with 6% bleach, 14 fl oz. The Intex Ultra XTR 18 ft × 52 in is listed at 6,981 gallons, so its owners can use this sheet as is.

Quick answer: chlorine for a 7,000 gallon pool (depends on product)

To raise free chlorine (FC) from 1 to 4 ppm, add about 22 fl oz of 12.5% liquid chlorine, 27 fl oz of 10%, or 43 fl oz of 6% bleach. In dry products, that is about 4.3 oz of 65% calcium hypochlorite (cal-hypo) or 3.1 oz of 90% trichlor. The 3–5 ppm range fits a pool with stabilizer (CYA) at 40 ppm. With more stabilizer, you need more chlorine.

At this size, the product you choose changes how much you carry home. A pool that loses 1 ppm a day goes through about 50 fl oz of 12.5% chlorine a week, but about 101 fl oz of 6% bleach. One gallon of 12.5% adds about 18 ppm here. One gallon of 10% adds about 14 ppm.

Dose table: chlorine by product for +1/+2/+5/+10 ppm

Use the table by task: +2 ppm is a normal daily top-up, +5 ppm is for after heavy use or a storm, and +10 ppm is a large one-time correction. At +10 ppm, you need more than a gallon of 6% bleach (1.15 gal) but only 72 fl oz of 12.5% chlorine. Trichlor and dichlor add stabilizer with every dose, so use them for steady feeding, not for big corrections. For older jugs that have lost strength, use the liquid chlorine calculator.

Scale your shock label to 7,000 gallons

The label on your shock product sets the dose. Most labels are written per 10,000 gallons, so multiply the printed amount by 0.7 for this pool:

  • Liquid chlorine, label says 1 gallon per 10,000 gallons: about 90 fl oz, roughly 0.7 of a jug
  • 65% cal-hypo, label says 1 lb per 10,000 gallons: about 11 oz
  • Any product, label says 2 lb per 10,000 gallons: about 1.4 lb

A 1 lb bag of 65% cal-hypo adds about 11 ppm of chlorine and about 8 ppm of calcium to 7,000 gallons. Swim again only after chlorine drops to the label's swim limit, often 4 ppm. Details and swim-again timing: how to shock a pool.

pH and alkalinity: acid and baking soda

At total alkalinity (TA) 100 ppm and CYA 40 ppm, lowering pH from 7.8 to 7.5 takes about 6.7 fl oz of 31.45% muriatic acid or 9 oz of dry acid. For the same pH change, TA 80 needs about 5.6 fl oz and TA 120 about 7.8 fl oz. Alkalinity doses do not depend on your other numbers:

  • Lower TA by 10 ppm: about 17 fl oz of muriatic acid.
  • Raise TA by 10 ppm: about 15.7 oz of baking soda, close to a pound. More in baking soda in a pool.
  • Raise pH from 7.2 to 7.5 (TA 80, CYA 30): about 10.3 oz of soda ash.

Enter your own TA and CYA in the muriatic acid calculator.

Stabilizer, calcium, and salt

  • Stabilizer: 9.3 oz per 10 ppm; 2.35 lb from 0 to 40 ppm; about 4.1 lb from 0 to 70 ppm for a salt pool. The stabilizer calculator works from your reading.
  • Calcium chloride (77%): 13.5 oz per 10 ppm; 4.2 lb for a +50 ppm step.
  • Salt: about 187 lb from 0 to 3,200 ppm. Four 40 lb bags bring it to about 2,740 ppm, just inside the 2,700–3,400 ppm range most salt chlorine generators use. Add about 27 lb from a fifth bag to reach 3,200. See the pool salt calculator.

Pools that hold about 7,000 gallons

Wall height is the biggest variable at this size. On an 18 ft round pool, going from a 48 in to a 52 in wall adds about 571 gallons by geometry (6,853 to 7,424 at 90% fill). Intex's listings show almost the same step: 6,423 gallons for the Greywood Prism Frame 18 × 48 and 6,981 for the Ultra XTR 18 × 52.

  • Intex Ultra XTR Frame 18 ft × 52 in: 6,981 gallons (fill level not stated)
  • Intex Greywood Prism Frame 18 ft × 48 in: 6,423 gallons
  • Coleman Power Steel Swim Vista 18 ft × 48 in: 6,092 gallons (from retailer listings; not confirmed with the manufacturer)
  • Bestway APX 365 24 ft × 12 ft × 52 in: 7,937 gallons
  • Intex Ultra XTR Frame 20 ft × 48 in: 7,947 gallons

The two 18 × 48 pools differ by 331 gallons, about 5%, so if you have a 48 in pool, enter your model's own capacity. The 18 ft round pool page also covers the 54 in wall.

Safety. Pour chlorine and acid slowly near the surface in front of a return jet, one product at a time, at least 30 minutes apart. Never combine them in a bucket or feeder. Swim again only when FC is back in your target range. Always follow the product label. Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

FAQ

How much chlorine do I put in a 7,000 gallon pool?

7.2 fl oz of 12.5% liquid chlorine, 9 fl oz of 10%, or 14 fl oz of 6% bleach per 1 ppm. To raise FC from 1 to 4 ppm, use about 22 fl oz of 12.5%. See how much chlorine to add for other products.

How much shock for a 7,000 gallon pool?

Multiply the label's "per 10,000 gallons" amount by 0.7. A cal-hypo label of 1 lb per 10,000 gallons means about 11 oz here. A liquid chlorine label of 1 gallon per 10,000 gallons means about 90 fl oz. Stay out of the pool until chlorine is back at or below the label's limit.

How much muriatic acid for a 7,000 gallon pool?

About 6.7 fl oz of 31.45% acid for pH 7.8 to 7.5 at TA 100 and CYA 40, and about 17 fl oz to lower TA by 10 ppm. Retest before a second dose.
