How Many Gallons in an 8 ft Round Pool?
Intex rates its 8 ft × 24 in Easy Set inflatable pool at 513 gallons, filled to 80% of the wall. An 8 ft pool is small enough that a few extra inches of water or a wrong scoop of chemical changes the numbers a lot.
Always follow your product’s label directions. Pool and spa chlorine, bromine, shock and algaecides are EPA-registered pesticides: use products labeled for pool or spa use, and don’t swim or soak until levels are within the limit on your product’s label. If this page and a label disagree, the label wins.

This page covers the small round pools sold in sets of one box: inflatable-ring pools and short metal-frame pools. Intex lists its Metal Frame 8 ft × 20 in at 483 gallons, filled to 90% of the wall. The two numbers look close, but they use different fill lines, which is the main reason "how many gallons in an 8 ft pool" has no single answer.
Quick answer: 8 ft round pool gallons by wall height
Pick the row that matches the wall height printed on your box or on the pool wall: 20, 24, 26, 30 or 36 inches are common. Each row shows the volume at a full fill line and at the typical fill line of inflatable and frame pools, in gallons and liters. The same data block lists the factory capacity of real 8 ft models and the starting doses for that volume.
| Wall height | Geometry | Frame pool estimate (× 0.93) | Inflatable estimate (× 0.87) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 42 in wall | 1,184 gal4,484 L | 1,102 gal | 1,030 gal |
| 48 in wall | 1,354 gal5,124 L | 1,259 gal | 1,178 gal |
| 52 in wall | 1,466 gal5,551 L | 1,364 gal | 1,276 gal |
| 54 in wall | 1,523 gal5,765 L | 1,416 gal | 1,325 gal |
Geometry = π/4 × diameter² × water depth × 7.48. Real pools hold less than the nominal size suggests. The factors are medians of 26 manufacturer capacities (our own calculation).

Real 8 ft models and what they hold
| Model | Wall | Factory capacity | Fill line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intex Easy Set (inflatable ring) | 24 in | 513 gallons | 80% |
| Intex Metal Frame | 20 in | 483 gallons | 90% |
| Bestway Fast Set (inflatable ring) | 26 in | we could not confirm | listings say 80% |
We read the Intex numbers on Intex's own product pages. For the Bestway Fast Set 8 ft × 26 in, we could not confirm a capacity on Bestway's website. Retail listings disagree: we saw both 555 and 608 gallons. If you own this model, check the number printed in your manual and use that.
The fill line matters more than it seems. An 8 ft pool at 80% of a 24 in wall is about 19 in of water. At 90% of the same wall it is about 22 in. Each 10% of fill line is about 2.4 in of water on a 24 in wall. That is why two pools of the same width can differ by tens of gallons.
Calculator: your exact depth
Set the diameter to 8 ft, enter the depth of water you actually have (measure from the floor to the water line, not the top of the wall), and read the volume. Measure at the center, where the floor is lowest, if the liner sags.
Small pool, small margin for error
Doses in a pool this size are tiny. A dose that is "a pinch" for a 10,000 gallon pool can be a fraction of a teaspoon here, and a heaping scoop can double your free chlorine (FC, the chlorine that is ready to kill germs) in one go. Three habits help:
- Use a labeled measuring spoon kept only for pool chemicals, never a kitchen spoon.
- Dose a little, wait, then test. Stir or let the water move for 15–30 minutes first. In small pools, a dissolving granule or tablet near the wall can read very high at one spot and zero at another.
- Know your product's strength. Liquid chlorine, household bleach, and chlorine granules differ a lot in strength. The chart for the closest size, the 500 gallon dose sheet, lists each form with its percent.
Chlorine tablets are the awkward case. Most 3 in tablets are made for much larger pools, and a whole tablet in an 8 ft pool can leave chlorine far too high. If you want to use tablets anyway, the chlorine tablets calculator shows what a partial tablet does to your volume. Hold any tablet in a floating dispenser, never on the liner, because undissolved tablet can bleach or damage vinyl.
When to drain instead of treat
With under 600 gallons, a full change of water can cost less than the chemicals plus the testing. Our own rule of thumb, not a published standard: if the pool is used by young children daily, or the water turns cloudy or green, draining and refilling is a sound choice. The kiddie pool chlorine page goes through how to decide, and what to do when you keep the water for a week or two.
If you do keep the water, a cover matters more than any dose. Sun and warmth speed up algae, and a small pool warms quickly. Cover the pool at night and when nobody is in it, keep leaves out, and have everyone rinse feet and sunscreen off first. If the water smells strongly of chlorine or stings the eyes, test it. The sharp smell often comes from used-up chlorine bound to dirt, not from too much of it. See why a pool smells like chlorine.
Common mistakes when measuring an 8 ft pool
- Using the box size as the water size. "8 ft" is the outer diameter at the top ring. The water surface inside an inflatable ring can be narrower than the box size.
- Counting the full wall. Ring pools are rated well below the top of the wall. Fill to the line, not to the ring.
- Forgetting people. Two or three people raise the water level by a few inches, and the volume changes with it. Dose by the water you filled, not by the water level while people are in.
- Mixing up feet and inches. An "8 ft × 24 in" pool is 8 feet wide and 24 inches tall, not 8 feet deep.
For other small sizes, see the 10 ft round pool page or the full pool gallons chart. If your pool is a bit larger, the 9 ft round pool page has its own models.
Safety. Keep chemicals out of reach of children and pets. Never mix chlorine with acid or with another chlorine product. Add chemical to water, never water to chemical, and do not let anyone in the pool while you are dosing. Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222. Always follow the product label. It is a violation of federal law to use a pesticide product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.
FAQ
How many gallons is an 8 ft round pool?
It depends on the wall height and the fill line. Intex rates its 8 ft × 24 in Easy Set at 513 gallons (80% fill), and its 8 ft × 20 in Metal Frame at 483 gallons (90% fill). Use the table above for other heights.
How much chlorine does an 8 ft pool need?
Very little. Use the dose sheet for 500 gallons, which lists each chlorine form by strength, and always test before and after. Follow the product label.
How many chlorine tablets do I put in an 8 ft pool?
Most 3 in tablets are made for much larger pools, so one whole tablet is usually too much. Use the tablets calculator for a partial tablet, and test the water before adding more.
Is an 8 ft pool the same as a paddling pool?
"Paddling pool" is a UK word for a small shallow pool. In the US the same pool is called a kiddie pool or a small inflatable pool, and the same volume math applies.
How long does it take to fill an 8 ft pool?
Divide the gallons by your hose flow in gallons per minute. Time how long a 5 gallon bucket takes to fill to measure your own flow, then divide.
