How many gallons is a 21 ft round pool?
A 21 ft round frame pool holds roughly 9,400 to 9,800 gallons with a 52 or 54 in wall.

By geometry at 90% fill, it holds about 10,100 gallons with a 52 in wall and 10,500 gallons with a 54 in wall. Real frame pools usually hold about 7% less, so plan on the lower numbers until you find your model's rated capacity.
Quick answer: 21 ft round pool gallons by wall height
The data block gives the geometry for 42, 48, 52, and 54 in walls, with two estimates beside each: × 0.93 for frame and steel-wall pools and × 0.87 for inflatable-ring pools. Every pool of 20 ft or more in our database is a frame or steel-wall pool, so read the middle column. For a "21x54" pool, that is 9,759 gallons; for 21 × 52, it is 9,397.
| Wall height | Geometry | Frame pool estimate (× 0.93) | Inflatable estimate (× 0.87) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 42 in wall | 8,162 gal30,895 L | 7,590 gal | 7,101 gal |
| 48 in wall | 9,327 gal35,308 L | 8,675 gal | 8,115 gal |
| 52 in wall | 10,105 gal38,251 L | 9,397 gal | 8,791 gal |
| 54 in wall | 10,493 gal39,722 L | 9,759 gal | 9,129 gal |
Geometry = π/4 × diameter² × water depth × 7.48. Real pools hold less than the nominal size suggests. The factors are medians of 26 manufacturer capacities (our own calculation).

Always follow your product’s label directions. Pool and spa chlorine, bromine, shock and algaecides are EPA-registered pesticides: use products labeled for pool or spa use, and don’t swim or soak until levels are within the limit on your product’s label. If this page and a label disagree, the label wins.
Why real capacity is lower than the math (0.933 median)
We compared 26 manufacturer capacities (Intex, Bestway, Coleman) with the plain geometry of their nominal sizes at the stated fill level. The median ratio was 0.933, and the range was 0.823 to 1.000. Inflatable-ring pools came in lowest because their walls lean in and the water surface is narrower than the ring. Frame pools ran from 0.856 to 1.000, and every manufacturer-confirmed frame pool of 14 ft or more came in at 0.93 or above. These factors are our own statistic, not an industry standard.
We have no 21 ft model in our database yet. The nearest is the Bestway APX 365 22 ft × 52 in (see the 22 ft round pool page), rated at 10,668 gallons at 90% fill, which is 0.962 of its geometry. If a 21 ft pool behaved the same way, it would hold about 9,720 gallons with a 52 in wall, a little above our 0.93 estimate. That difference of about 300 gallons is the real uncertainty until you check your manual.
Want a number from your own pool? If you run a salt system, one 40 lb bag of pool salt raises about 9,400 gallons by roughly 510 ppm. Add a weighed amount, wait 24 hours with the pump running, and measure the rise: volume = salt added ÷ rise. The pool volume calculator page explains the method.
Starting doses for this volume
These use the 52 in frame estimate of 9,397 gallons. The data block's starting doses assume a 48 in wall (8,675 gallons), so they come out about 8% lower.
- Chlorine, +1 ppm: 9.6 fl oz of 12.5% liquid chlorine, 12 fl oz of 10%, or 19 fl oz of 6% bleach.
- Alkalinity, +10 ppm: 1.3 lb of baking soda.
- Stabilizer (CYA) on a fresh fill: 2.35 lb for CYA 0 to 30 ppm; 3.15 lb to 40 ppm.
- Salt for a new salt system: about 251 lb to reach 3,200 ppm (six 40 lb bags plus 11 lb).
Always follow the product label. It is a violation of federal law to use a pesticide product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. For shock and acid, see the full 10,000-gallon dose chart and enter your own gallons in its calculator.
Calculator: your exact depth
Enter 21 ft, your wall height, and your fill level. Pick "Metal frame" for a steel-wall pool. If the manual gives a capacity, type that into any dosing calculator instead of the estimate.
Chemicals per week for this size (estimate from your own loss)
At about 9,400 gallons, a 2 ppm daily chlorine loss takes about 1.05 gallons (135 fl oz) of 12.5% liquid chlorine a week. Track your real loss: test at the same time of day for three or four days and average the drops. A sudden jump in daily loss, with no change in weather or swimmers, can be an early sign of algae, before the water looks green.
Safety. Wear gloves and eye protection when pouring chlorine or acid. Pour low, close to the water, in front of a return jet, and wait at least 30 minutes between chlorine and pH products. Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
FAQ
How many gallons is a 21 ft round 52 in pool?
About 10,105 gallons by geometry at 90% fill, and about 9,400 gallons after the typical correction for frame pools. Your model's rated capacity, if listed, is more accurate than both.
How much chlorine for a 21 ft pool?
About 9.6 fl oz of 12.5% liquid chlorine or 19 fl oz of 6% bleach per 1 ppm in a 52 in pool. A 3 ppm top-up is about 29 fl oz of 12.5% chlorine.
How long does it take to fill a 21 ft pool?
For 9,400 gallons, about 31 hours at 5 gallons per minute and 16 hours at 10. The water costs about $9.40 for each $1 per 1,000 gallons on your water bill.
