How many gallons is a 16x32 pool?
A 16 × 32 ft inground pool holds about 18,200 gallons at 3.5 to 6 ft deep.
On this page (7 sections)
With a steady slope from 3.5 to 8 ft, it holds about 22,000 gallons. An above-ground rectangular frame pool of the same footprint holds less: Intex rates its 32 × 16 ft × 52 in at 14,364 gallons.
Quick answer for a 16x32
Length and width are fixed at 512 square feet of water surface, so the only thing that changes the answer is depth. Every extra half foot of average depth adds 1,915 gallons. The data block lists 4 to 6.5 ft average depths; find your average (shallow end plus deep end, divided by 2) and read across.
| Average depth | Gallons | Liters |
|---|---|---|
| 4 ft | 15,320 gal | 57,993 L |
| 4.5 ft | 17,235 gal | 65,242 L |
| 5 ft | 19,150 gal | 72,491 L |
| 5.5 ft | 21,065 gal | 79,740 L |
| 6 ft | 22,980 gal | 86,989 L |
| 6.5 ft | 24,895 gal | 94,238 L |
Average depth = (shallow end + deep end) ÷ 2 for a steady slope. Example: 3.5 ft to 8 ft averages 5.75 ft.

Always follow your product’s label directions. Pool and spa chlorine, bromine, shock and algaecides are EPA-registered pesticides: use products labeled for pool or spa use, and don’t swim or soak until levels are within the limit on your product’s label. If this page and a label disagree, the label wins.
Depth profiles: flat, sloped, with deep end
| Floor profile | Average depth | Gallons |
|---|---|---|
| Flat, 4 ft throughout | 4.0 ft | 15,320 gal |
| Steady slope, 3.5 to 6 ft | 4.75 ft | 18,193 gal |
| Shallow end plus deep end: 16 ft at 3.5 ft, 8 ft slope, 8 ft at 8 ft | 5.19 ft | 19,868 gal |
| Steady slope, 3.5 to 8 ft | 5.75 ft | 22,023 gal |
| Steady slope, 4 to 9 ft | 6.5 ft | 24,895 gal |
Gallons = 32 × 16 × average depth × 7.48. For a pool with a separate deep end, average each section by its length.
The "with deep end" row is the one people get wrong. If you average only the two end depths of a pool that has a long flat shallow area and a short deep end, 3.5 and 8 ft give 5.75 ft and 22,023 gallons. Weighted by length, the same pool averages 5.19 ft and holds 19,868 gallons. The simple average overstates it by about 2,150 gallons, which means 11% too much chlorine in every dose. Measure where the slope starts and ends, and use sections.
Above ground, the same 16 × 32 footprint is a different pool. Intex's Rectangular Ultra XTR 32 × 16 × 52 is rated at 14,364 gallons; Bestway's APX 365, which is 31 ft 4 in long, at 13,798 gallons. A 16 × 32 oval above-ground pool (straight sides, round ends) with a 52 in wall holds about 13,334 gallons by geometry and roughly 12,400 after our frame correction.

Always follow the product label. It is a violation of federal law to use a pesticide product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

The calculator opens at 32 × 16 ft, 3.5 to 6 ft. Enter your shallow and deep water depths (water, not the wall or coping). For an above-ground pool, switch Depth to "Above-ground wall height".
How many people fit in a 16x32 pool?
There is no rule for backyard pools. For public pools, the CDC's Model Aquatic Health Code uses a density factor of 20 square feet per bather for flat water (15 for agitated water). Applied to 512 square feet, that is a maximum of 25 people. That figure is a code limit for supervised public pools, not a comfort target: for laps, games, or diving, far fewer people is sensible. More swimmers also means more chlorine demand, so expect higher use after a party.
Safety. Add liquid chlorine and acid separately, at least 30 minutes apart, in front of a return jet with the pump running. Never mix products, and keep swimmers out until you have retested. Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
FAQ
What is the volume of a 16x32 pool?
At 3.5 to 6 ft deep: 512 sq ft × 4.75 ft = 2,432 cubic feet, or about 18,193 gallons. At a flat 4 ft it is 15,320 gallons; at 3.5 to 8 ft, 22,023 gallons.
How many people can swim in a 16x32 pool?
The public-pool code density of 20 square feet per bather gives a maximum of 25 people for 512 square feet. For comfortable backyard swimming, plan on far fewer.
How many gallons in a 16x32 pool with a deep end?
About 19,900 gallons for a pool with 16 ft of 3.5 ft shallow end, an 8 ft slope, and 8 ft of 8 ft deep end. A steady slope from 3.5 to 8 ft holds 22,023 gallons. Measure your own sections for the real number.
